Andy Skemer is a Professor in the Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His research focuses on the discovery and characterization of directly imaged exoplanets using both ground-based and space-based observatories. He is a Co-Principal Investigator for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Early Release Science program dedicated to exoplanet imaging.
Skemer also specializes in the study of cold brown dwarfs, having obtained the first spectrum of the coldest known brown dwarf, WISE 0855, which exhibits evidence of water clouds. His work in instrumentation involves developing systems like LBTI, ALES, SCALES, PSI, PEAS, and KPIC to advance exoplanetary science.
