Professor Andy Meharg is a faculty member in the School of Biological Sciences at Queen's University Belfast, affiliated with the Institute for Global Food Security (IGFS). He holds the rank of Professor and has contributed extensively to research on toxicants in food systems, particularly arsenic in rice. His work has influenced international regulations by the EU and WHO. He graduated from Queen's University and has focused on environmental chemistry, pollutants in agronomic chains, and public health implications of food contaminants.
Research interests include mitigating arsenic in rice, nutrient analysis in grains, and environmental exposure risks. His team developed a rice-cooking method to reduce toxicant levels. Notable media engagements include BBC and The Independent coverage of his arsenic research. Collaborative projects address global food security and sustainable agriculture practices.
Recent studies focus on geographical variations in rice contamination, dietary exposure in children, and agroecosystem dynamics. His work spans analytical chemistry, toxicology, and policy advocacy. Grants and advising reflect his commitment to training future researchers in these areas.
