Andy Hector is a Professor of Ecology at the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Oxford, and a Fellow of Linacre College, Oxford. He co-directs the Plants for the 21st Century initiative and specializes in community ecology, focusing on biodiversity loss, ecosystem functioning, and ecological services in grassland and forest systems.
His research includes leading the Sabah Biodiversity Experiment in Borneo to study forest regeneration after logging, participating in the NERC thematic programme Human-modified tropical forests (including the SAFE project on forest fragmentation), and contributing to the global Nutrient Network on nitrogen enrichment impacts. He also has expertise in ecological statistical analysis.
Key professional roles include Associate Professor and Deputy Director at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Studies (University of Zurich, 2009-2012), Assistant Professor at the University of Zurich (2003-2009), and Royal Society University Research Fellow at Imperial College London (2002-2003). He earned a PhD from Imperial College London and a First Class BSc in Natural Environmental Science from the University of Sheffield.
