Andy Connolly is a Professor at the University of Washington's Department of Astronomy within the College of Arts & Sciences. He holds the William P. and Ruth Gerberding University Professorship and serves as Director of the eScience Institute and Associate Vice Provost for Data Science. His roles also include leadership in the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and the LINCC collaboration.
Education: Prior to UW, he was on faculty at the University of Pittsburgh and Johns Hopkins University. His research focuses on large-scale astronomical surveys, cosmology, galaxy evolution, and data science. He pioneered the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) simulations and co-developed Google Sky during a sabbatical at Google.
Research Interests: His work bridges astronomy and data science, emphasizing computational tools for massive datasets. Key projects include LSST analysis, Rubin Observatory collaborations, and cloud-native frameworks for scientific computing. He co-authored Statistics, Data Mining, and Machine Learning in Astronomy to advance machine learning in astrophysics.
Advising and Grants: Supervised numerous students and postdocs listed above, contributing to interdisciplinary data science initiatives. His leadership in eScience Institute and DiRAC Institute fosters collaboration across disciplines.
Labs/Teams: Leads the eScience Institute (UW's data science hub) and DiRAC Institute (astronomy-focused data science). Active in LINCC, a partnership advancing cloud-native tools for LSST-scale data analysis.
