Andy Catley

Andy Catley is a Research Professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy and Research Director at the Feinstein International Center, Tufts University. He leads policy reform programs focusing on humanitarian and development policies in pastoralist regions of Africa. His work spans 25 years, including directing Feinstein's Africa Regional Office in Ethiopia (2000-2011) and chairing the Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards (LEGS) Steering Committee (2006-2015). He holds veterinary and epidemiology degrees from the Universities of London and Edinburgh, with advanced qualifications in Population Medicine.

Research Focus: Rural transformation in crisis-affected areas, participatory epidemiology, and evidence-based policy for pastoralist communities. Key interests include livestock health systems, acute malnutrition dynamics, and integrating community knowledge into policy frameworks.

Key Contributions: Authored foundational texts on pastoralism and development, including the open-access book Pastoralism and Development in Africa. His work on participatory epidemiology methods has been widely adopted in resource-poor settings. Current projects include the Karamoja Resilience Support Unit (Uganda) and Ethiopia's Agriculture Knowledge Policy project.
