Andy Cammidge is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of East Anglia (UEA), serving as Associate Dean for Postgraduate Research in the Science Faculty and Course Director for the MSc in Advanced Organic Chemistry. He leads research on organic materials synthesis, focusing on liquid crystals, porphyrins, phthalocyanines, and transition-metal catalysis. His career includes roles at UEA since 1995, with postdoctoral stints at the University of Toledo (USA) and the University of Leeds.
He holds a BSc (1984–1987) and PhD (1987–1990) from UEA. His research integrates curiosity-driven science with applied challenges, such as designing molecular machines and developing novel synthetic methods for conjugated systems. Key projects include:
- Synthesis of porphyrin-phthalocyanine hybrids
- Asymmetric Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling catalysis
- Anti-aromatic twinned triphenylenes with liquid crystal properties
He collaborates widely, including with the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia Cultural Bureau on projects like 'Synthesis of Porphyrin-Porphyrazine Hybrids.' Over 38 funded projects highlight his leadership in molecular materials research.
Teaching spans organic chemistry at all levels, including aromaticity, conformational analysis, and supramolecular chemistry lectures. Administrative roles include membership in the School Executive and oversight of postgraduate research in science.
