André van Schaik

prof. dr. ir. André van Schaik is a Professor at the International Centre for Neuromorphic Systems, Western Sydney University, and concurrently serves as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Optera. He holds an honorary professorship at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Science and Engineering, affiliated with the Bio-inspired systems and circuits department under the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials.

Education: M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Twente (1990), Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL, 1998). Postdoctoral research at the University of Sydney (1998-1999) under a Garnett Passe fellowship. Subsequent roles include Senior Lecturer (1999-2004), Reader (2004-2011), and Research Professor (2011-2018) at the University of Sydney.

Research focuses on neuromorphic engineering and computational neuroscience, with emphasis on event-based vision systems and biomedical applications. Notable contributions include 35+ patents, 300+ publications, and founding four startups: VAST Audio, Personal Audio, Heard Systems, and Optera Solutions.

Leadership roles include Director of the International Centre for Neuromorphic Systems (2018-2024) and current CTO at Optera. Awards include the Garnett Passe Postdoctoral Fellowship (1998).
