Dr. André Krouwel is an Associate Professor in Communication Science at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam's Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. He is also founder and co-owner of Kieskompas (Election Compass), a global leader in Vote Advice Applications. His research focuses on political parties, elections, voting behavior, populism, Euroscepticism, extremism, and conspiracy belief. He holds a PhD from VU Amsterdam on political party transformations in Western Europe.
Key affiliations include the Network Institute and research groups MLG and CCCC. His work bridges academia and practice, using Election Compass data to study voter decision-making mechanisms. He has authored over 235 publications and received awards like the e-Democracy Award for EUProfiler.
Research interests span European party systems, political polarization, and the societal impacts of economic precarity. He collaborates internationally on projects like the Conspiracy Research Network and Vote Advice Research network. Active in media commentary and public engagement, he contributes to policy debates through expert analysis on populism and democratic challenges.
