Dr. André Karl is Acting Department Head of the Fundamentals of Electrochemistry (IET-1) at Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH, Germany. His research focuses on proton exchange membrane (PEM) and anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis, fuel cells, and advanced characterization techniques. Key areas include gas bubble dynamics, membrane electrode assembly (MEA) optimization, and degradation mechanisms in industrial-scale electrolyzers.
Recent work emphasizes deep learning-based performance analysis, X-ray tomography for material integrity, and data-driven modeling. Collaborations involve technology de-risking for gigawatt-scale deployment. Publications highlight parasitic current elucidation, nanomechanical electrode analysis, and gas permeability studies critical to hydrogen production efficiency.
