André Gerber is a Professor of RNA Biology at the University of Surrey, UK, affiliated with the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and the School of Biosciences. His research focuses on post-transcriptional gene regulation mediated by RNA-binding proteins and non-coding RNAs, exploring how these molecules control mRNA processing, transport, turnover, and translation to influence cell physiology and disease. Gerber's work combines genomics, proteomics, and cell biology approaches across diverse model organisms.
Education & Career:
- Bachelor's in Biochemistry at the University of Zurich
- PhD in Cell Biology from the University of Basel (focus: adenosine deaminases acting on RNA)
- Postdoctoral studies at Stanford University with Dan Herschlag and Pat Brown, pioneering genome-wide RNA-protein interaction studies
- Independent group leader at ETH Zurich (2004-2011)
- Professor at University of Surrey since 2012
Research Themes:
- Functional roles of RNA-binding proteins in gene expression
- Mechanisms of RNA folding and phase separation
- Implications of post-transcriptional regulation in disease
Labs & Teams: Directs the Gerber Lab, which integrates computational and experimental methods to study RNA biology systems.
