André Chappatte is a Research Fellow at the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) affiliated with the Berliner Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies (BGSMCS) at Freie Universität Berlin. His work focuses on social anthropology, with field expertise in Mali and Côte d'Ivoire. He holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from SOAS (2013) and an MSc from the London School of Economics.

Chappatte's research explores everyday Islam, urban marginality, and religious practices in West Africa. His ethnographic fieldwork in Bougouni, Mali, examines how Muslims negotiate piety amid economic precarity and social change. Key themes include popular piety, nightlife morality, and youth identity.
His publications analyze urban religious festivals, material modernity, and borderland crises, reflecting interdisciplinary engagement with anthropology, urban studies, and postcolonial theory.
