Andriy Zayarnyuk is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of Winnipeg, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts. His research focuses on Eastern European history, particularly Habsburg Galicia, Soviet Ukraine, and the cultural, social, and political dynamics of peasant communities in imperial contexts. He teaches courses on Russian and Ukrainian history, modern cities, nationalism, and the socio-cultural history of Eastern Europe.
Dr. Zayarnyuk’s scholarship emphasizes the intersection of imperial governance, rural societies, and national identity formation. Notable works include Lviv’s Uncertain Destination (2020), analyzing urban infrastructure as imperial legacy, and Framing the Ukrainian Peasantry in Habsburg Galicia (2013), which examines agrarian social structures and nationalist discourse. His research also explores religious practices (Letters from Heaven, 2006) and the historiography of Soviet and post-Soviet Ukraine.
He has contributed to interdisciplinary collaborations such as the Newberry Consortium in American Indian Studies and the State Socialism Workshop. His publications span monographs, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles in English, Ukrainian, and other European languages, reflecting his deep engagement with Central European and Slavic Studies.
