Andrew Welfle

Dr Andrew Welfle is a Senior Research Fellow at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research within the Department of Engineering for Sustainability at The University of Manchester. His roles include Challenge Lead for Net Zero in the Sustainable Futures Network and Topic Representative for the UK Supergen Bioenergy Hub. He holds Chartered Engineer (CEng) status and is a member of the Energy Institute.

Andrew's research focuses on sustainability, climate change, and bioenergy systems. Key areas include biomass supply chains, BECCS (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage), land-use analyses, and renewable energy integration. He has contributed to over 50 research outputs, including policy briefings and sustainability assessments, and collaborates with NGOs, industry, and governmental bodies to advance sustainable bioenergy sectors.

His educational background includes a PhD in Biomass Resource Analyses from The University of Manchester (2015), an MSc in Energy & Sustainable Building Design (2010), and a BA in Geography (2005). He teaches courses on renewable energy systems, zero-carbon infrastructure, and energy systems analysis.

Andrew has received accolades including the University of Manchester Distinguished Achievement Medal (2014) and the Making a Difference Award (2023) for his work on environmental impact and carbon capture. He actively engages in policy consultations, editorial roles, and public discourse on climate change mitigation strategies.

His research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, bridging national energy targets with field-scale decision-making, and advancing sustainable development aligned with UN SDGs. Key projects include modeling biomass resource availability and evaluating low-carbon solutions for sectors like shipping and glass manufacturing.
