Andrew Weiner is an Associate Professor of Art Theory and Criticism at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. He holds a Ph.D. in Rhetoric from UC-Berkeley (2011), supported by a Jacob K. Javits Fellowship. Previously, he taught at California College of the Arts and the Prison University Project at San Quentin State Prison. His research focuses on intersections of aesthetics, politics, and media in 20th-century Europe and contemporary global art practices, particularly exploring South-South transnational networks and decolonial curating. Weiner’s work critiques universalist frameworks in art history, emphasizing alternative circuits of cultural exchange linked to the Non-Aligned Movement and alterglobalization.
His publications include essays in *Grey Room*, *ARTMargins*, and *Journal of Visual Culture*, alongside critical writing for *Texte zur Kunst* and *Afterall*. Key publications address the aesthetico-political field in 1960s West Germany/Austria, critiques of global contemporary art, and pan-Arab socialist legacies. He edits a volume on discursive exhibition formats and lectures on curatorial practices, artistic research, and exhibition history.
Wiener’s awards include the Javits Fellowship, and his work engages with activist art, biopolitical critiques (e.g., ACT UP), and the cultural logic of neoliberalism. His teaching emphasizes contemporary aesthetic theory, exhibition historiography, and politically engaged art practices.
