Andrew Waggoner is an Instructor of Music at Duke University's Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a D.M.A. from Cornell University (1986) and a B.Mus. from the Eastman School of Music (1982). Prior to Duke, he served as Professor of Composition, Theory & Music History at Syracuse University (1986–2018) and Program Coordinator at Syracuse University/Conservatoire de Strasbourg (2004–2018).
- Research interests include Jazz Music and race, Music and history, Cross-cultural studies, and improvisation.
- Notable works: Ce morceau de tissu (2019), Quantum Memoir: Concertos for violin, piano & guitar (2018), and the chapter Burwell and Space: Inner, Outer, Environmental and Acoustical (2017).
Awards include the Guggenheim Fellowship (2005), Academy Award in Music (2009), and Fromm Commission (2018). He teaches courses such as Introduction to Jazz and Giants of Jazz, exploring racial attitudes and music's sociocultural dimensions.
His artistic and scholarly work bridges composition, performance, and critical discourse on music’s role in addressing societal challenges. He maintains an active blog, Whither Music, reflecting on art’s political and ethical responsibilities.
