Dr. Andrew Toon is a Senior Lecturer and Course Leader in Mathematics at Newman University, part of the Faculty of Arts, Society and Professional Studies. He joined the institution in 2015 to develop its single honours BSc Mathematics degree program. Previously, he held roles in Singapore as a mathematics head at higher education institutes, following postdoctoral positions in Japan and Oxford. He earned a First Class BSc in Mathematical Physics from the University of Sussex and a PhD in theoretical physics there, focusing on 'Non-supersymmetric Orbifolds and Atkin Lehner Symmetry'.
Education:
- BSc Mathematical Physics, University of Sussex (First Class)
- PhD: 'Non-supersymmetric Orbifolds and Atkin Lehner Symmetry' (University of Sussex)
His research spans theoretical physics topics like String Theory and Quantum Gravity, more recent work on the Protein Folding Problem, and innovative use of computational tools for mathematics education. He teaches both pure and applied mathematics, including mathematical modelling, complex analysis, linear algebra, optimization, and partial differential equations, while supervising final-year student dissertations.
