Andrew Sluyter is the Doris Z. Stone Latin American Studies Distinguished Professor in the Department of Geography & Anthropology at Louisiana State University (LSU), where he holds the Andrew Carnegie Fellowship. He earned his PhD in Geography from the University of Texas at Austin (1995), MA (1990) and BA (1987) from the University of British Columbia.
His research focuses on the Atlantic world’s colonial and postcolonial landscapes, emphasizing historical political ecology, human mobility, and the role of marginalized groups in shaping environmental histories. Notable works include Black Ranching Frontiers: African Cattle Herders of the Atlantic World, 1500–1900 (2012) and Colonialism and Landscape (2002), which challenge Eurocentric narratives by centering African agency in landscape transformations. His recent scholarship explores the cartographic representation of the Middle Passage and the digital humanities.
Sluyter’s awards include the 2015 John Brinckerhoff Jackson Book Prize and the 2022 Andrew Carnegie Fellowship. He teaches courses on Latin America, human-environment interactions, and digital humanities. His affiliations include the Louisiana Office of State Climatology and the Critical Ecologies Research Group. Sluyter’s work bridges historical geography, environmental justice, and interdisciplinary collaborations.
