Andrew Rollins is the Leonard Case Jr. Professor of Engineering in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University's Case School of Engineering. He also holds an affiliation with the School of Medicine as a Member of the Cancer Imaging Program at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. His research focuses on developing advanced biomedical optical technologies, particularly optical coherence tomography (OCT), with applications in developmental cardiology, cardiovascular disease, and cancer imaging.
Dr. Rollins earned his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Brigham Young University. His research interests span biomedical optics, optical imaging, optical coherence tomography, image analysis, cancer imaging, and cardiac imaging. His laboratory develops OCT technologies for studying developmental cardiology and endoscopic imaging of cardiovascular disease and cancer, including applications in optical stimulation and imaging of electrophysiology.
His recent publications demonstrate strong trends in applying OCT to cardiac electrophysiology, embryonic heart development, and cancer imaging. The research consistently bridges engineering innovation with clinical applications, particularly in real-time guidance of cardiac procedures and non-invasive assessment of tissue properties. His work frequently involves interdisciplinary collaboration across engineering, medicine, and basic science disciplines.
- Fellow, American Institute for Medical & Biological Engineering (AIMBE)
- Fellow, SPIE
- International Leader Award 2020
- Center for International Affairs International Activities Award 2014
- CWRU School of Engineering International Activities Award 2011
Dr. Rollins serves as faculty advisor for CWRU SPIE and CWRU Engineers Without Borders, reflecting his commitment to student development and international engagement. His research has been supported by numerous grants enabling the development of novel optical imaging technologies. His laboratory focuses on translating OCT innovations from bench to bedside, with particular emphasis on cardiac applications and developmental biology models. Current projects include optical pacing of embryonic hearts, real-time guidance of cardiac ablation procedures, and non-invasive assessment of corneal crosslinking.
