Andrew R Stillwell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He holds a Ph.D. (2019) and M.S. (2016) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from UIUC, as well as dual B.S. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia (2005). Previously, he served as Group Manager at National Instruments (2006-2013).
Research Interests: His work focuses on power electronics, renewable energy systems, transportation electrification, and wide bandgap devices. Key areas include power converter optimization, pulsed power design, and electrothermal deicing for aircraft. His Stillwell Power Group explores efficient energy management and thermal systems for applications in aerospace, data centers, and renewable energy.
Recent Contributions: Recent work includes developing pulse electrothermal deicing frameworks for aircraft and high-efficiency multilevel converters. He co-authored influential papers on flying capacitor topology, thermal management, and frost sensing. His research emphasizes practical solutions for next-generation electric systems.
Awards & Teaching: He received the ISEE Levenick Teaching Sustainability Fellowship (2020-21). Teaches courses like ECE 464 (Power Electronics), ECE 469 (Lab), and ECE 598 (Advanced Power Electronics).
Labs/Teams: Leads the Stillwell Power Group, collaborating on projects like the Electro-Thermal Pulsed De-Icing Framework and liquid immersion cooling for data centers.
