Andrew Perry

Andrew Perry is a Senior Lecturer in the University Writing Program at the School of Individualized Study, Rochester Institute of Technology. He holds a BA from State University College at Oswego and an MA from State University College at Brockport.

His research focuses on Comics Studies, Visual Literacy, and Multimodal approaches to Composition. Perry explores how visual narratives function rhetorically and how they can be integrated into writing pedagogy. His work bridges academic scholarship with creative practice, as evidenced by both his scholarly publications and his children's literature.

Perry's scholarly publications examine comics as serious cultural artifacts worthy of academic study. His research demonstrates how visual literacy skills are essential in our increasingly multimodal communication landscape. He applies these insights directly to his teaching of first-year composition.

Perry has shared his expertise through notable presentations including a Rochester TEDx Talk on visual literacy entitled 'Reinventions: Visual Literacy and Graphic Narratives' (2011) and a featured lecture at the Toronto Comics Arts Festival (2012).

He currently teaches UWRT-150 FYW: Writing Seminar, where he develops students' proficiency in analytical and rhetorical reading and writing, with emphasis on multimodal literacy practices.

As an educator, Perry emphasizes the writing process, teacher-student conferencing, critical self-assessment, and academic integrity. His pedagogical approach reflects his research interests in multimodal communication.
