Andrew P. Feinberg, MD, PhD, is a leading Professor at Johns Hopkins University, affiliated with the School of Medicine and Whiting School of Engineering. He directs the Feinberg Lab at the Center for Epigenetics, focusing on how genetics and epigenetics interact in disease. His research spans cancer, aging, and neuropsychiatric disorders, emphasizing epigenetic stochasticity and environmental influences. He holds honorary doctorates from Karolinska Institute, Uppsala, and Amsterdam, and is a member of the National Academy of Medicine.
Education: MD and MPH from Johns Hopkins, postdoctoral training in developmental biology at UCSD, and clinical genetics fellowships at Johns Hopkins.
Research interests include epigenomic mechanisms, DNA methylation patterns in disease, and the role of environment in phenotypic plasticity. Notable contributions include pioneering epigenomics and developing tools for molecular and statistical analysis of epigenetic data.
Key scientific achievements: Discovered altered DNA methylation in cancer, founded the first NIH-supported epigenome center, and linked epigenetic stochasticity to metastasis. His work bridges epigenetics with Darwinian evolution, proposing mechanisms for Lamarckian-like inheritance.
Scientific awards include Fellowships from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.
Active in grants and collaborations, he leads studies on epigenetic reprogramming in cancer, dietary interventions, and environmental epigenetics. His lab integrates genetics, bioinformatics, and clinical medicine to address complex diseases.
