Andrew McLaren

Dr. Andrew McLaren is a Teaching Professor in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at the University of Strathclyde. He holds a PhD in Modelling of Thermomechanical Processing of Metals from the University of Sheffield (1994) and a BEng (Hons) from the same institution (1989). His primary expertise lies in materials science and engineering education, with a focus on online delivery methods and work-based learning initiatives. He leads the Graduate Apprenticeship in Engineering: Design and Manufacture, supporting employed apprentices. He is an active member of committees like the Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ Academic Standards Committee and chairs accreditation visits across UK universities. Additionally, he serves as the Glasgow Military Education Committee Convenor and University Armed Forces Champion, advocating for military-affiliated students' academic opportunities.

Research Interests: McLaren’s work emphasizes improving STEM education accessibility, work-based learning, and bridging school-to-university transitions. His publications explore additive manufacturing automation, student engagement strategies, and online laboratory enhancements. He co-leads projects such as Successful STEM Transitions and Enhancing Learning from Student Placements, funded by internal grants.
