Andrew Kern is a Professor of Biology at the University of Oregon’s College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on integrating computational methods with population genetics and evolutionary biology, particularly in understanding genomic variation, spatial ecology, and the genetic basis of adaptation in organisms like malaria mosquitoes and cephalopods. He leads the KR-COLAB, a collaborative research group advancing genomic simulation and analysis tools.
His work spans disciplines including machine learning applications in genetics, spatial population dynamics, and the evolution of sex determination systems. Notable contributions include developing tools like stdpopsim and disperseNN2, which enable realistic genome simulations and spatial dispersal modeling. Kern’s research also addresses pressing questions in vector-borne disease by studying Anopheles mosquitoes’ genomic adaptations.
Recent projects analyze how geographic data can uncover beneficial alleles, model human genomic variation, and explore ancient evolutionary processes in cephalopods. His publications highlight the interplay between computational innovation and biological inquiry, bridging theory with practical applications in conservation and public health.
