Andrew Joseph Ortiz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Arlington. His creative practice explores digital imaging and photography as tools for symbolic expression, particularly through layered digital collages that address personal experiences with epilepsy.
Ortiz's artistic research focuses on digital collage techniques that blend photographic elements with symbolic imagery to create visual narratives. His 'Measured Disorder' series examines the psychological impact of living with seizure disorders, while his 'Electroencephalograms' series transforms medical data into panoramic artworks. These explorations investigate the intersection of medical experience, identity, and digital art creation.
His exhibition history includes national juried shows such as the Convergence exhibition at Indianapolis Art Center (2023), 64 Arts National Juried Exhibition (2022), and Tallahassee International (2017). Ortiz has received multiple awards including an Honorable Mention at Convergence (2022) and Works on Paper Award (2022).
As thesis committee chair, Ortiz has supervised graduate students including Rachel Herod ('Coping Through Art') and Caleb Dulock ('Perpetual States').
