Andrew Jimenez, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation at Yale School of Medicine specializing in sports medicine and hip preservation. He is dual fellowship-trained in sports medicine and hip arthroscopy, bringing specialized expertise to the Yale Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation department where he focuses on helping athletes and active individuals maintain pain-free function and avoid hip replacement.
Dr. Jimenez completed his undergraduate studies at Brown University where he was a collegiate wrestler in the 174-pound weight division. He earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the same institution, receiving the Peter J. Stern Chief Resident Leadership Award. His specialized training continued with a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Connecticut and an additional year of focused training in hip arthroscopy at the American Hip Institute in Chicago.
Dr. Jimenez's research centers on outcomes of hip arthroscopy in athletes and the biomechanics of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). His work spans clinical outcomes research, biomechanical studies, and systematic reviews investigating hip preservation techniques. He has published extensively on hip arthroscopy outcomes, particularly regarding athletes, with studies examining capsular management, labral preservation techniques, and concomitant procedures like periacetabular osteotomy. His research demonstrates how hip preservation approaches can help active patients return to their desired level of function while avoiding more invasive procedures.
Dr. Jimenez has been nominated for the John N. Forrest Jr., MD Prize for Mentorship in Student Research in both 2024 and 2025, reflecting his commitment to education. He mentors residents including Maxwell Modrak (2022-2025) and emphasizes building strong patient relationships by understanding individual goals to develop personalized treatment plans.
As an active member of the orthopaedic community, Dr. Jimenez serves on editorial boards for Arthroscopy and the American Journal of Sports Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (since 2014), American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (since 2017), and Arthroscopy Association of North America (since 2017). Clinically, he works with patients ranging from college athletes to "weekend warriors" who want to return to activities that are important to their identity, believing in trying nonoperative approaches first whenever possible.
