Dr. Andrew J. Cowan is an Associate Professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology and at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center in the Clinical Research Division. He serves as Clinical Director of the Myeloma Service at Fred Hutch and specializes in treating patients with multiple myeloma and other blood disorders. Dr. Cowan leads clinical trials of new treatments including engineered immune cells, combination strategies, and genomics data applications.
Dr. Cowan received his M.D. from the University of Washington, completed his residency at Boston Medical Center, and pursued fellowships in Hematology/Oncology at UW/Fred Hutch and at the Boston University Amyloidosis Center. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Medical Oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Cowan's research focuses on hematologic malignancies, particularly multiple myeloma and amyloidosis. He leads clinical trials investigating novel therapies including immunotherapy approaches, engineered immune cells, and combination treatment strategies. His work spans from early-phase trials to large multi-center studies examining the efficacy of new treatment regimens for plasma cell disorders.
Analysis of Dr. Cowan's recent publications reveals a strong focus on multiple myeloma treatment innovations, particularly the use of daratumumab and other novel agents in various treatment settings. His research spans clinical trials from phase I to III, with particular emphasis on transplant-eligible patients, high-risk smoldering myeloma, and the application of CAR T-cell therapy. His work also addresses treatment complications including cytokine release syndrome and immune effector cell-associated toxicities.
