Andrew Higginbotham is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Chicago. He holds a BSc from Harvey Mudd College, an MPhil from Cambridge University, and a PhD from Harvard University. Before joining UChicago, he served as an Assistant Professor at IST Austria, a research scientist at Microsoft, and a postdoctoral fellow at JILA/CU Boulder.
His research focuses on quantum materials and devices, including superconductivity, Josephson junction arrays, Majorana fermions, and nanoscale quantum systems. He leads the Higginbotham Lab (http://hlab.psd.uchicago.edu), exploring topics like proximity-induced phenomena in hybrid systems and topological phase transitions.
Recent work includes studies of kinetic inductance in superconducting electron gases, plasmon fluids in Josephson junction chains, and room-temperature optomechanical systems. His articles highlight advancements in quantum device engineering and condensed matter physics.
Notable research contributions include investigations into induced superconductivity in semiconductor nanowires, symmetry-broken Josephson junctions in twisted bilayer graphene, and bolometric detection of quantum radiation. His work bridges theoretical models with experimental realizations in low-temperature and nanoscale physics.
