Andrew Hedding

Andrew Hedding is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Washington (College of Arts & Sciences). His research focuses on theoretical syntax and fieldwork, particularly examining information structure, focus movement, and wh-movement in Mixtec languages. He has conducted fieldwork since 2017 with San Martín Peras Mixtec speakers in Mexico and California.

Research Interests: Hedding explores whether syntactic focus movement exists, the representation of abstract concepts like focus in grammar, connections between wh-movement and focus movement, and the role of alternatives in grammar. His work combines formal syntax with empirical field research in endangered languages.
