Dr Andrew Hayles is a postdoctoral Research Fellow at Flinders University's College of Medicine and Public Health, working within the Biomedical Nanoengineering Laboratory. His research bridges microbiology, materials science, and biotechnology to develop innovative antimicrobial solutions.
- PhD in Medical Biotechnology (2023) and BSc in Biomedical Science (2018)
- Specializes in material-pathogen interface manipulation to enhance antibiotic efficacy
- Key grants: Channel 7 Children’s Research Foundation Annual Grant and Flinders Foundation Health Seed Grant (both 2025)
Research Focus:
Andrew's work centers on antimicrobial biomaterials, nanostructured surfaces, and antibiotic potentiation technologies. He investigates how pathogens respond to engineered materials to improve drug sensitivity, particularly for Staphylococcus aureus and biofilm-related infections. His 15 most recent articles span topics from gallium liquid metal applications to plasma-polymer coatings, emphasizing translational approaches.
Scientific Awards:
- Vice Chancellor's Award for Doctoral Thesis Excellence
- Top 10 Publication in Nanomaterials (2022)
- Cover feature in Advanced Materials Interfaces
- Invited speaker at Adelaide Dental Research Day
- Faculty of Science Outstanding Achievement Award (University of Adelaide)
Supervision:
Currently supervising 8 Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students while contributing to multiple interdisciplinary projects. His laboratory research has received significant industrial and academic funding, including competitive grants totaling >$100,000 as lead investigator.
