Dr Andrew Gritt is currently Head of the Department of Humanities at Nottingham Trent University's School of Social Sciences. He teaches undergraduate students, supervises postgraduate research, and conducts interdisciplinary research primarily in employability within the Humanities, British economic and social history (1650-1914), and family history. His work intersects with museums, heritage organizations, and public history initiatives.

His research spans three major areas: undergraduate employability (focusing on Humanities graduates and graduate attributes), poverty and welfare history (1600-1900), including workhouse populations and the role of the New Poor Law in northern rural society, and landscape history (focusing on rural/urban landscapes, drainage systems, and industrialization in the North West of England). He combines archival expertise with public engagement, particularly through workhouse museums and family history organizations.
Dr Gritt's scholarly work has been published in journals such as Agricultural History Review, Rural History, and Local Population Studies, with recent projects addressing topics like farm service labor trends and land tenure systems. He collaborates with academics including Dr John Virgoe and Peter Park.
Key external roles include serving as External Examiner at Bournemouth University, Editor of the Transactions of the Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire, and membership on various regional archives councils. He also co-founded the Workhouse Museums Network and advises multiple UK workhouse museums.
Dr Gritt supervises postgraduate research in areas such as museum conservation, literary heritage interpretation, and wartime health management. His work emphasizes connecting historical research with contemporary societal issues and educational practices.
