Andrew Devereux is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of California, San Diego. He specializes in medieval and early modern Mediterranean history with a global perspective, focusing on Spanish imperialism, ethno-religious hierarchies, and transregional connections. Previously, he served as an Assistant Professor at Loyola Marymount University (2012–2018) and held postdoctoral fellowships at UCLA and the Library of Congress. His research has been supported by prestigious grants and fellowships.

His research explores Spanish imperial ideologies, legal frameworks for conquest, and Iberian encounters with non-Abrahamic peoples in Africa and the Caribbean. His first book, The Other Side of Empire (Cornell University Press, 2019), examines Spanish rationales for Mediterranean and American conquests. His second book project, Children of Adam, analyzes ethno-religious hierarchies in early modern Iberian expansion.
Devereux is a founding member and current President of the Spain-North Africa Project and serves on the Mediterranean Seminar’s Advisory Board. He teaches courses on Mediterranean urban spaces, environmental history, and early modern Spain.
