Andrew Deener is a Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he researches the cultural and political dimensions of cities, communities, and infrastructures. Since 2019, he has served as Co-Editor of Qualitative Sociology.

His work spans Culture, Urban Studies, Environmental Studies, and Science & Technology Studies, with methodological expertise in Historical and Ethnographic Methods. Deener authored Venice: A Contested Bohemia in Los Angeles (2012) and The Problem with Feeding Cities (2020), examining urban transformation and infrastructure inequality. Current projects investigate California's water and energy systems, while his forthcoming book The Urban Way (Oxford University Press) analyzes global urban semiotics.
Deener mentors graduate students in sociological theory and qualitative methods, emphasizing how infrastructures shape social abundance and exclusion. His editorial leadership in Qualitative Sociology advances methodological rigor in ethnographic and historical research.
