J. Andrew DeWoody is a Professor in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources at Purdue University, with a courtesy appointment in the Department of Biological Sciences. His research focuses on conservation genomics, evolutionary genetics, and molecular ecology, with applications to wildlife and fisheries management. He has held roles such as Fulbright U.S. Scholar (Slovenia, 2025) and was elected AAAS Fellow (2016) for contributions to molecular ecology.
DeWoody holds a B.S. in Wildlife and Fisheries from Texas A&M University, an M.S. in Genetics from Texas A&M, and a Ph.D. in Zoology from Texas Tech University. His postdoctoral training included work with John Avise at the University of Georgia. His research is funded by agencies like the NSF, USDA, and NOAA, among others.
His research interests include genomic approaches to conservation, population genomics of endangered species, and the role of genetic diversity in species survival. Notable honors include the 2011 Purdue Agricultural Research Award and the 2011-2012 Outstanding Graduate Educator Award.
DeWoody has served on the IUCN’s Species Survival Commission (2017-2020), the editorial boards of Molecular Ecology and Molecular Ecology Resources, and the Scientific Advisory Group for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. His work emphasizes genomic tools for conservation monitoring and biodiversity preservation.
