Andrew Coan is the Milton O. Riepe Chair in Constitutional Law and Director of the William H. Rehnquist Center on the Constitutional Structures of Government at the James E. Rogers College of Law, University of Arizona. He previously served as Associate Dean for Research (2020–2024) and held faculty positions at the University of Wisconsin Law School (2008–2014) before joining Arizona. His academic career includes judicial clerkships with Judge Richard Posner and a fellowship at Stanford Law School.
Coan’s scholarly focus spans Supreme Court dynamics, federalism, executive power, and constitutional interpretation. His notable works include Rationing the Constitution (Harvard UP, 2019), analyzing judicial capacity’s impact on Supreme Court decision-making, and Prosecuting the President (Oxford UP, 2018), which explores special prosecutors’ role in accountability mechanisms. Both books earned prestigious recognition, including a Silver Gavel Award nomination.
His research frequently intersects constitutional history, modern legal challenges, and institutional governance. Recent work addresses AI’s implications for constitutional interpretation, post-Dobbs reproductive rights, and the nondelegation doctrine. Coan actively engages public discourse through media contributions to outlets like The Atlantic and Wall Street Journal.
Award-winning faculty member, Coan has received Arizona Law’s Distinguished Legal Scholar (2024) and the Bell Faculty Service Award. His teaching expertise includes Constitutional Law, Federal Courts, and related advanced seminars.
