Andrew C. Butler

Andrew C. Butler is a Professor in the Department of Education and holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. He directs the St. Louis Translational Fellows in Education program and teaches courses on the intersection of psychological science and education.

He holds a PhD from Washington University in St. Louis.

His research focuses on the malleability of memory, including how retrieval processes affect memory content and phenomenological characteristics. Key interests include higher-order learning, error correction, self-regulation, and the interplay between learning and motivation. He emphasizes contextual factors like knowledge domains and individual differences, and employs diverse methodologies (quantitative, qualitative, experimental, longitudinal) across laboratory, classroom, and educational technology settings.

Dr. Butler has secured over $8 million in grants from funders such as the James S. McDonnell Foundation and National Institute for Mental Health. His awards include the J. Don Read Early Career Award and Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award. He has served as Associate Editor for Journal of Applied Research in Memory and Cognition and on editorial boards of top-tier journals.

He champions equity, diversity, inclusion, and open science practices in research and education. His service roles include Chair and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Education.
