Dr. Andrew Beencke is a Teaching Professor in the School of Education at The University of Queensland, specializing in mathematics and critical thinking education. His research explores effective methods to cultivate critical thinking in students, with a focus on intellectual character and mathematics pedagogy. He leads the UQ Critical Thinking Project, designing professional learning programs for schools that emphasize action research and reflective practice. His recent work examines how teachers' evolving beliefs about critical thinking influence classroom practices.
Dr. Beencke holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Education from The University of Queensland. His research interests include problem-solving in mathematics education, intellectual virtue development, and professional learning design. He has contributed to influential works such as the 2025 book Shaping School Success: Empowering Educational Leaders, which addresses leadership strategies for educational reform.
In 2023–2025, he secured funding for a collaborative project with the Archdiocese of Brisbane Catholic Education to advance critical and creative thinking pedagogy. He is currently available to supervise higher degree research students. His professional engagements include advising government bodies like the Queensland Department of Education and Training, as reflected in a commissioned report (2022).
