Andrew Barnes is Professor in the School of the Environment at the University of Queensland, with a joint appointment in the School of Agriculture and Food Sustainability. His research focuses on aquatic animal health, including vaccine development for aquaculture, comparative immunology of marine species, and host-directed bacterial evolution.
Barnes investigates immune systems across diverse aquatic organisms—from corals to commercial fish species—and develops vaccines against bacterial, viral, and parasitic diseases. His lab employs genomic tools to study pathogen evolution and host adaptation mechanisms.
Recent publications (2022-2025) highlight advances in vaccine technologies (autogenous vaccines, nanopore sequencing for diagnostics) and climate change impacts on fish health. Research trends show increasing focus on antimicrobial resistance mitigation and sustainable aquaculture practices.
