Andres de Jesus Vargas Soplin

Andres de Jesus Vargas Soplin is a Researcher at the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB) in Potsdam, Germany, working in the Technology Assessment department since 2025. He completed his doctoral studies at ATB from 2020-2024 after earning a Master's degree in 'Sustainability, Society and the Environment' from Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel (2017-2019) and a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering from Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina in Lima, Peru (2007-2011).

His research focuses on integrated waste management systems, particularly the utilization of residual biomass for energy production through biogas generation. He specializes in modeling life cycle assessments using Python and has developed the BIORIM model for assessing biological resource utilization impacts. His work centers on urban waste streams, especially autumn tree leaves, evaluating their potential for biogas production to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and supply renewable energy.

Vargas Soplin's recent publications analyze the greenhouse gas mitigation potential of converting urban tree leaves from composting to biogas production, with a focus on Berlin as a case study. His research demonstrates that biogas scenarios result in significantly lower net GHG emissions compared to traditional composting, with pretreated leaves yielding the best environmental performance.

He is currently involved in the NEmGEM and AnkER research projects at ATB, focusing on reducing nitrous oxide and ammonia emissions through processing crop residues in vegetable production and other sustainable agricultural engineering applications.
