Andres M. Lozano is a University Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto, where he also serves as Chairman of the Division of Neurosurgery and holds the Dan Family Chair in Neurosurgery, the RR Tasker Chair in Functional Neurosurgery, and a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Neuroscience. Born in Sevilla, Spain, he moved to Ottawa, earned his MD and PhD, and trained at McGill University.

Dr. Lozano’s research revolutionized deep brain stimulation (DBS) for neurological and psychiatric disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, depression, anorexia, and Alzheimer’s. His work demonstrated DBS-induced neurogenesis and memory enhancement, with over 450 publications and 5 edited textbooks. He pioneered first-in-human DBS trials for dystonia, Huntington’s, and cognitive disorders.
Scientific Awards include the Olivecrona Medal, Jonas Salk Award, Order of Merit of Spain, and election to the Royal Society of Canada and Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. He has delivered over 500 lectures, including 45 named lectures.
Dr. Lozano’s grants include CIHR and NIH funding for DBS trials in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and dystonia. He mentors over 60 functional neurosurgery fellows and leads the Lozano Lab at Toronto Western Research Institute.
