Andrej Kral is a Professor of Systems Neurosciences at the Department of Linguistics Hearing Research Centre, Hannover Medical School. He holds dual roles as Chaired Professor of Auditory Neuroscience and serves as a Fellow at CORLAS and the German National Academy of Science (Leopoldina). His primary research focuses on brain plasticity, neuroprosthetic devices, and cochlear implants, with significant contributions to understanding sensory disorders.
Key research interests include the development of neural prosthetics, auditory cortex function in deafness, and cognitive impacts of hearing loss. He leads the Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) project (2022-2025) aimed at optimizing cochlear implant outcomes. His work bridges electrophysiological studies in animal models with clinical applications in human patients.
Recent publications (2022-2025) emphasize biomarkers for neural degeneration, cochlear implant efficacy in noisy environments, and cognitive effects of hearing impairment. His work has been recognized with the 2024 Pioneer Award in Basic Science for contributions to auditory neuroscience.
