Andrei Lobanov

Andrei Lobanov is a Senior Staff Astronomer at the Max-Planck-Institut für Radioastronomie (MPIfR) in Bonn, Germany, where he works in the VLBI group. His research focuses on the physics of parsec-scale jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN), spectral properties of compact radio sources, and cosmological applications of VLBI data.

• Previous Employment: Postdoctoral Fellow (1996-98) and Junior Research Associate (1993-96) at MPIfR; Junior Research Associate at NRAO (Socorro, NM; Charlottesville, VA).
• Education: PhD in Physics (1996, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology), M.Sc. in Astronomy (1991, Moscow State University), B.Sc. in Astronomy (1989, Moscow State University).

Research Interests include:

• Probing the broad-line region in AGN using VLBI.
• Studying the relationship between parsec-scale jet spectra and kinematics.
• Space VLBI missions (VSOP, Radioastron) and multifrequency observations of AGN.
• Mapping synchrotron turnover frequency distributions in compact jets.
• Analyzing opacity effects in AGN central regions.
• Investigating rapid radio variability in TeV AGN like Mkn421 and Mkn501.
