Andreas Züttel is a Full Professor at EPFL's School of Basic Sciences (SB), leading the Laboratory of Materials for Renewable Energies (LMER). He specializes in hydrogen storage materials, catalytic processes for CO2 conversion, and renewable energy technologies. His research focuses on developing advanced materials for energy storage and sustainable chemical processes, including metal hydrides, graphene-based composites, and catalysts for CO2 valorization. He holds affiliations with multiple EPFL units, including SB-SCGC and the ISIC doctoral school.
His work integrates experimental and computational methods, with notable contributions to CO2 hydrogenation to hydrocarbons, hydrogen storage systems, and catalyst design using machine learning. Key projects include optimizing metal hydride alloys for high-pressure compressors and creating scalable graphene-based materials for hydrogen adsorption. Züttel has supervised numerous PhD students and authored over 280 publications, emphasizing industrial applications and green chemistry.
