Associate Professor Andreas Wesener is a faculty member at Lincoln University's School of Landscape Architecture in New Zealand, specializing in urban design and resilience. His research examines the interplay between social, political, and economic processes with the physical built environment, focusing on transformative urban landscapes for sustainable cities. He currently serves as Principal Investigator for Lincoln University in the Horizon Europe project 'REDESIGN' (2025), a three-year international research initiative on urban food systems transformation involving 12 consortium members from 9 countries.
- Lincoln University, School of Landscape Architecture (2013-present)
- Head of School (2022-2025)
- Chair, Faculty Teaching Committee (2020-2021)
- Academic Coordinator (2018-2020)
- Research Fellow, Research Institute for Regional and Urban Development, Dortmund (2010-2013)
- Research Associate, Birmingham City University (2007-2010)
Wesener's educational background includes a Dr.-Ing. from Bauhaus University Weimar, an MSc from University College London, and a Dipl.-Ing. Architektur from Hochschule Bochum. His research interests span urban design, authenticity of place, urban atmospheres, post-disaster temporary urbanism, bottom-up governance, community resilience, integrated green-grey infrastructure systems, sustainable urban food systems, and urban community gardens. His work often examines how urban landscapes transform following disasters and how community-led initiatives contribute to urban resilience.
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on urban community gardens as mechanisms for post-disaster recovery and sustainable urban development, with particular emphasis on Christchurch's experience following the 2010/11 earthquakes. He also investigates urban atmospheres and sensory experiences of urban environments, along with practical applications of landscape architecture for public health issues like UV protection. His work bridges theoretical urban studies with practical design applications, often employing mixed-methods approaches to capture user experiences of urban spaces.
- Editor's Citation for Excellence Award for outstanding professional contributions as an associate editor for 'Urban Agriculture & Regional Food Systems' (2022)
- Lincoln University Excellence in Education Award (2021)
- Associate editor, Urban Agriculture & Regional Food Systems
Wesener has supervised multiple postgraduate research students focusing on topics including urban cycling infrastructure, medium density housing, urban ecological restoration, and green-grey infrastructure integration. His research has been supported by significant funding including the NZ National Science Challenge 11 ('Building better homes, towns and cities') from 2016-2019, where he led a study on user-centered approaches to capturing data on urban cycling infrastructure in Christchurch, and his current Horizon Europe project REDESIGN. He has also served as NZ representative for EU-funded COST Action TU1201 'Urban Allotment Gardens in European Cities' (2013-2016).
He actively contributes to the academic community as a reviewer for numerous journals including Landscape and Urban Planning, Urban Forestry and Urban Greening, Cities, Urban Design International, and Journal of Urbanism, among others. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and he frequently presents his research internationally, having co-authored some of the first peer-reviewed research on community gardens in New Zealand.
