Andreas Stylianides is Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Cambridge's Faculty of Education, where he serves as Chair of the Faculty Board. He is also a Fellow of Hughes Hall College and an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Oxford's Department of Education. Previously, he held a 5-year appointment as Visiting Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), an academic fellowship at the University of Oxford, and a postdoctoral fellowship at UC Berkeley.
Stylianides chairs the Mathematics Education Research Group and has dedicated his career to understanding and improving classroom practice in mathematics education. As a Fulbright scholar with advanced degrees from the University of Michigan, his research focuses on mathematical reasoning, proving, and problem solving/posing across educational levels. His work involves designing theory-based classroom interventions to address students' difficulties with essential mathematical practices, working with participants from 5-year-olds to university students while addressing topics including teachers' mathematical knowledge, early algebraic ideas, and task design.
His scholarly output demonstrates consistent focus on proof and reasoning in mathematics education, with recent work exploring the impact of generative AI on mathematical competencies. His research employs various methodologies, particularly design experiment methodology, to develop both practical solutions and theoretical understanding of classroom processes. The publications show progression from foundational work on proof in elementary mathematics to current investigations of AI's role in mathematical reasoning.
- Vice President of the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education
- Member of the Governance Group of Cambridge Mathematics
- Advisory Board member of the International GeoGebra Institute
- Editorial Board member of Research in Mathematics Education, Science & Education, and International Journal of Science and Mathematics Education
Stylianides has supervised numerous doctoral students whose research explores mathematical reasoning, problem solving, and teacher development across various cultural contexts including China, Norway, Egypt, and Taiwan. His grant-funded research projects have addressed supporting secondary mathematics teachers, enhancing students' proof competencies, and developing virtual classroom environments for teacher learning, with funding from organizations including the UK's Economic and Social Research Council and the Spencer Foundation.
