Andreas Schiffer

Andreas Schiffer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical & Nuclear Engineering at Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi, UAE. He holds a DPhil in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford (2013) and a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Graz University of Technology (2009). Prior to joining Khalifa University in 2014, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Imperial College London.

• Education: DPhil in Engineering Science (2013, University of Oxford); Dipl-Ing in Mechanical Engineering (2009, Graz University of Technology).

Dr. Schiffer’s research focuses on Mechanics of Materials, with specific emphasis on Multifunctional Composites and Architected Materials fabricated via additive manufacturing. His work explores materials for extreme environments, including self-sensing and microwave-absorbing properties. He also investigates blast, shock, and impact loading on materials and structures, and solitary wave-based non-destructive testing. His research has resulted in publications in international journals, book chapters, and conference proceedings.

He has conducted research visits at Imperial College London and delivered invited seminars at institutions such as the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, and RMIT Melbourne. Dr. Schiffer is affiliated with the Advanced Research and Innovation Center and serves on the editorial boards of Frontiers in Materials and Frontiers in Aerospace Engineering. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the European Mechanics Society (EUROMECH).

• Research Projects:
  • Multifunctional polymer-derived ceramics and hybrid composites enabled via additive manufacturing (Khalifa University, 2023–2025): Development of open-cell PDC lattices for hybrid composites with tunable mechanical and functional properties.
  • Repair of metallic aircraft engine components via selective laser melting (Sanad Aerotech & Khalifa University, since 2023): Using LPBF/SLM to repair high-stress components, reducing costs and enhancing sustainability.

Dr. Schiffer advises six PhD candidates and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses such as Advanced Mechanics of Solids and Materials, Finite Element Analysis, and Fracture Mechanics and Fatigue.
