Prof. Dr. Andreas Regelsberger is a full Professor in the Department of Japanese Studies at the University of Trier since April 2014. He previously served as Junior Professor (2009-2012) and research assistant (2007-2009) at the same institution. His international experience includes a Visiting Professorship at Western Michigan University (2012-2013) and studies at the University of Tsukuba under a Mombushō scholarship (1999-2000). He coordinates academic exchanges through summer schools and contributes to intercultural theatre research.
- Ph.D. in Japanese Studies (University of Hamburg, 2003-2006)
- M.A. in Japanese Studies, Sinology, Modern German Literature (University of Hamburg, 1996-2003)
His research centers on Japanese theatre, particularly Edo-period puppet theatre (Ningyô Jôruri), exploring aesthetic principles like jo-ha-kyū and kata. He analyzes voice-body dynamics, cultural memory in Nō/Kabuki, and modern adaptations of traditional forms. Collaborative projects examine intercultural influences (German-Italian) on Japanese performance and the evolution of audience roles in Meiji-era theatre.
Recent publications focus on performance-related concepts and contemporary Japanese theatre trends. His 2024 entries in The Routledge Companion define structural aesthetics, while 2021's Okada Toshiki & Japanese Theatre investigates precarity in modern drama. Earlier works trace Edo-period mechanics (2010), intertextuality (2012), and word fetishism in Chikamatsu's plays (2012).
- Mombushō scholarship (1999-2000) for Japanese cultural studies
- Graduation scholarship at Tsukuba University (2003)
- Co-editor of three major theatre compendiums (2011, 2012, 2021)
