Professor Andreas Petzold serves as a Leading Scientist and Head of the Global Observation department at the Institute of Climate and Energy Systems (ICE-3) within Forschungszentrum Jülich, while also holding a professorship in Atmospheric Physics at the University of Wuppertal. His extensive career focuses on atmospheric composition and climate research.
His research interests span multiple critical areas of atmospheric science:
- Global and long-term observation of atmospheric composition using instrumented passenger aircraft
- Water vapour-cirrus cloud interactions from global observations
- Spatio-temporal variability of tropospheric aerosol
- UTLS aerosol and its role in the climate system
- Aerosol optical properties, absorption coefficient, black carbon and mineral dust
- Development of methods for measuring aerosol optical properties at multiple wavelengths
- Open data practices in scientific research
Professor Petzold coordinates the European Research Infrastructure IAGOS and has led significant EU projects including ENVRI-FAIR, connecting environmental research infrastructures to the European Open Science Cloud. His work demonstrates strong leadership in international scientific collaboration.
As an active contributor to global scientific initiatives, he serves on the Scientific Advisory Group Aerosols of the Global Atmosphere Watch programme of WMO and represents the ENVRI Community in the OSCARS project. His research group at ICE-3 operates from Building 05.2, Room 3048 at Forschungszentrum Jülich.
