Andreas Hengstermann

Andreas Hengstermann is an Associate Professor in Urban and Regional Planning (BYREG) at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU). Prior to joining NMBU in 2023, he was a SNSF Research Associate at Ulster University (UK). He holds a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Bern (CH), where he maintains an external teaching role. His education includes a Diplom-Ingenieur in Spatial Planning from TU Dortmund University (DE) and postgraduate studies in public law and higher education teaching at the University of Bern.

His research focuses on planning law, property rights, and institutional frameworks influencing urban and regional development. He has conducted comparative studies across multiple European countries (AT, BE, CH, NL, NO, UK) and contributed to planning theory, emphasizing governance structures and decision-making mechanisms. He currently serves as Vice-President of the International Academic Association on Planning, Law, and Property Rights (PLPR) and holds editorial roles in Urban Planning.

Teaching responsibilities include leading the Planning Theory course at NMBU and contributing to the Urban and Regional Planning program at the University of Bern. His research extends to land policy instruments, urban densification strategies, and policy effectiveness in addressing spatial development challenges.

Professional memberships include the AESOP Young Academics Network, PLPR Executive Committee, and the Informationskreis für Raumplanung (IfR). His work bridges legal frameworks, spatial planning, and socio-political dynamics to advance sustainable urban policies.
