Andreas Helwig is an Associate Professor in Electro-Mechanical Engineering at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ), School of Engineering. He holds affiliations with the Centre for Future Materials and the Institute for Advanced Engineering and Space Sciences. His career spans over 40 years, including roles at Queensland Rail and as a Director of engineering consulting firms. He specializes in renewable energy, sustainable energy storage, electrical machines, and techno-economic modeling. Helwig has contributed to projects such as solar car park innovation, grid-connected renewable systems, and circular economy initiatives.
Education: BEng from USQ (1979). Research focuses on energy storage technologies, grid integration, and materials engineering. He has authored/co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and conference papers. Current supervisions include doctoral research on energy storage systems and grid protection challenges in renewable energy grids.
Key areas of expertise include electrical insulation systems, maintenance reliability engineering, and sustainable resource recovery. His work bridges academic research with industry applications, such as optimizing energy storage affordability and advancing axial flux machine designs for wind energy.
