Prof. Dr. Andreas Harrer serves as Professor for Human-Computer Interaction and Web Engineering in the Department of Computer Science at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences since 2019. With 25 years of specialized experience, his work bridges artificial intelligence and educational technology to develop intelligent support systems for teaching and learning environments, focusing on personalized and collaborative learning solutions.
Harrer completed his academic foundation at the Technical University of Munich (studies and doctorate) and habilitation at the University of Duisburg-Essen, with additional affiliations at the University of Eichstätt and Technical University of Clausthal. His career spans both German and international research ecosystems through EU-funded initiatives.
His research centers on AI-driven educational innovation, particularly intelligent tutoring systems that adapt to learner behavior, computer-supported collaborative learning frameworks, and learning analytics for interaction analysis. Current projects like IPPOLIS explore AI integration in higher education curricula, while SecAware2.0 addresses cybersecurity literacy through educational interventions, reflecting his commitment to translating research into practical pedagogical tools.
Harrer leads significant research grants including the BMBF-funded Faledia project (2020-2022) on digital work environments and serves as co-applicant/sub-project leader for IPPOLIS under the "Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education" program. Through the KoALA research group, he supervises Bachelor's and Master's theses across human-computer interaction, web technologies, and network analysis applications in educational contexts.
As a core member of the Institute for the Digitalization of Work and Living Environments (IDiAL), he directs the KoALA research group which develops next-generation educational technologies. The group maintains active collaborations with institutions like DFKI/Saarbrücken and London Knowledge Lab, evidenced by past leadership in EU projects such as Metafora for self-regulated learning support.
